Esava Tuivodo of the Kwaca Na Vatu Boxing Club won the first gold medal for Team Fiji in the Sub Junior Under-15 (34-36kg) category of the Tri Nations Championship at Suva’s FMF Gymnasium yesterday.

Tuivodo beat Australia’s Riley Jackson in the second round when the referee stopped the contest.

Trainer Rusiate Toqabale dedicated Tuivodo’s win to his late father (Jioji Voli).

“He passed away in 2014 and I’m sure his son made him proud with the win,” he said.

“I’m happy and grateful to God that Esava has won for the club.”

Toqabale also acknowledged the province of Namosi for their unwavering support towards their club.

“Esava was slow in countering his opponent’s punches and that is one area that we’ll improve on,” he said.

“I urge the people to come down on Saturday to support grassroots boxing at the FMF Gymnasium.”
