Plus a nonna-inspired pasta dinner with Tipo 00’s Andreas Papadakis and Saturday Night Pasta’s Elizabeth Hewson as part of the Festival of Food.
A collaboration between two pasta masters plus souped-up exclusive Yo-Chi flavours are coming to Sydney, when The Streets of Barangaroo returns this month. Spanning two dates across October, the Festival of Food features a gourmet Yo-Chi takeover and a nostalgic Italian feast.
On Wednesday, October 29, Andreas Papadakis, from renowned Melbourne restaurant Tipo 00, and Italian-born chef and internet sensation Daniela Maiorano, join forces for Nonna Night, a communal long-table dinner where pasta is a focus.
Held at Barangaroo’s new Italian restaurant Gina, the four-course dinner will be hosted by Elizabeth Hewson, whose Saturday Night Pasta cookbook has cemented her as one of Australia’s favourite pasta storytellers. Guests can expect soulful food rooted in memory and recipes to take home, as well as a $149 four-course dinner including snacks and three drinks (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
“My brother Attilio and I will be preparing involtini di melanzane, ricotta, and pomodoro e mozzarella, which is involtini with eggplant, ricotta, tomato and mozzarella,” says Maiorano.
The dish was created by her grandmother, Wanda, in the family’s restaurant in Maiorano’s home town of Sulmona, in Abruzzo, and is still served there by her father.
“I’m the fourth generation of chefs in my family,” she says. “My great-grandfather opened a restaurant after the First World War [and] my nonna Wanda took it over for many decades.”
Maiorano, who is based in Byron Bay and runs cooking and food tours of Italy, has dedicated her life to preserving and promoting the food knowledge she learned through her family.
“I hope guests take away a sense of community and food as connection, food as an equalising force, and the capacity to transmit story through food. I would love everyone to leave with at least one new friend,” says Maiorano.
On Saturday, October 25, from noon to 4pm, dessert icon Andy “Bowdy” Bowden (Kiln, ex-Saga and Hartsyard) brings his signature over-the-top style to cult favourite frozen yoghurt chain Yo-Chi.
For one afternoon only, the Barangaroo outlet will sell his limited-edition Bowdy Bowl featuring an addictive, whimsical combination of candied hazelnuts, pineapple and makrut-lime jam, toasted coconut cake and black sesame caramel. Bowden suggests pairing his toppings with coconut flavour Yo-Chi.
There will also be a live DJ, block-party vibes and an “early spoon gets the froyo” format, meaning when it’s sold out, it’s gone.
