The Western Province Sports Division has successfully concluded a one-week volleyball and netball knockout competition in Gizo.
This marked the revival of organised sports in the provincial capital after several quiet years.
The competition, hosted by the Western Provincial Government (WPG) Sports Division, brought together youths, men, and women from across Gizo Ward 11, including surrounding communities such as West Gizo and Saeragi.
Western Province Sports Coordinator Jim Ben told Star Sports that the event formed part of the division’s planned activities for the current financial quarter.
“For quite a number of years, there have been no sports activities in Gizo township,” Ben said.
“With the upgrade of the JFK Sports Field and the long absence of competitions, we were able to host this knockout to engage our young people and the wider community,” he added.
Mr Ben added that the tournament also serves as preparation for teams taking part in the upcoming Gizo–Kolombangara Cup, scheduled for 15–19 December in Kolombangara.
“Sports that will be played during the Gizo–Kolombangara Cup include men’s soccer, volleyball, and netball,” he confirmed.
