World Food Day commemorated with call for unity and resilience – Solomon Star News

SOLOMON Islands on Monday joined the rest of the world in celebrating World Food Day, an annual event observed globally on October 16.

This year’s theme, “Hand in Hand for Better Food and Better Future,” underscores the importance of collaboration in achieving food security and sustainable agricultural development.

Speaking during the celebration at the Heritage Park Hotel in Honiara, Minister of Agriculture and Livestock Frankly Wasi said the occasion marks a special moment for agriculture and the people of Solomon Islands.

“Today reminds us that food is life, and agriculture is the heartbeat of our islands,” Minister Wasi said.

He emphasised that the global theme carries a powerful message of unity and shared responsibility.

“It reminds us that we must walk together — government, private sector, development partners, farmers, chiefs, women, and youth — all working hand in hand to build a resilient food system for our islands,” he said.

Minister Wasi said food security is more than just a policy priority; it is a moral obligation deeply rooted in Solomon Islands’ way of life.

“Food security is grounded in our kastom, our culture of sharing food, and our respect for the land and sea that sustain us. When one family goes hungry, it is not their problem alone — it is a challenge for us all,” he said.

World Bank Country Manager, Bernard Harborne.

He reaffirmed that agriculture remains the backbone of the rural economy and the primary source of livelihood for nearly 80 percent of the population.

“It connects our people to their land, sustains our families, and supports our economy,” he said.

However, he noted that local farmers continue to face major challenges such as climate change, pests and diseases, limited market access, and lack of finance and technology.

“To address these challenges, we must build partnerships, strengthen capacity, and promote innovation and sustainability in all aspects of farming — from traditional gardens to modern agribusiness ventures,” Minister Wasi said.

The event was attended by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Dr Samson Viulu, Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Representative for the Pacific Islands Douglas Yee, UNDP Deputy Resident Representative Prof. Raluca, and World Bank Country Manager Bernard Harborne.
