Why Momo? Byrne Tells

Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has defended winger Epeli Momo after he was subjected to criticism by fans on social media over his performance with the Fijian Drua and the Flying Fijians. Also, critics questioned his selection into the starting line-up.

Speaking to SUNsports, Byrne said Momo has developed as a formidable winger on a short period of time.

“What I learnt about being in Fiji that it doesn’t take much for some people to be critics,” Byrne said.

“The people in the rugby world know that he’s (Momo) trying his hardest and we work really hard with him.”

Momo was playing in the forwards while he was contracted with French club Montauban in the ProD2 competition for three years (2020-2023).

Byrne said Momo had made a great transition from flanker to wing.

“He played in the flank at France, and we gave him an opportunity to grow himself on the wing when he joined the Fijian Drua. He’s come a long way in a very short period of time in Fiji and full love to Epeli on what he’s done for this team.”

Byrne said there are always critics in all corners of the world.

“That’s what they do, they criticise but at the end of the day the people around Momo know how hard he works and what he does,” he said.

“We’re fully supportive of him and there’s no need to jump on him after one game.”

The 24-year-old has been dropped from the Match 23 squad for tonight’s Pacific Nations Cup grand-final against Japan in Osaka. He has been replaced by Ilaisa Droasese while Ponipate Loganimase has been named on the bench.

Byrne said Momo is a great player who is capable of a strong comeback.

WE’RE READY: IKANIVERE

Meanwhile, Flying Fijians captain Tevita Ikanivere said the players are confident heading into tonight’s Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan.

“The players have good clarity with the two (training) sessions in Osaka and we’re looking forward to battle Japan tomorrow (today),” he said.

“There is always pressure and it’s a good thing that we’re in the right place challenging ourselves.”

Ikanivere said he looks forward to leading the players in his first PNC final as captain.

“We know what to do as we got the message during the week.

“We just have to execute the game plan and take the trophy home,” he added.

The match kicks-off at 10.05pm.
