Aussie music superstar G Flip has a few favourite pubs and cafes they can’t wait to return to from Los Angeles. And they are refreshingly relatable.

“Bananas, water and maybe get a little cuddle from my wife.” Aussie musician G Flip – born Georgia Flipo — is imparting hangover remedies during a home soil stopover.
In early September, G Flip was back in their hometown to accept the Melbourne Fashion Week ambassador mantle at a drizzly launch event at Queen Victoria Market before jetting back to Los Angeles to begin crafting a third album.
The ARIA-award-winning singer and drummer took some time out to enthusiastically shared the eateries and dishes they have a hankering for when they’re back home.
Favourite Melbourne cafes and pubs
When in Melbourne, cafes Glass Merchants and Batch Espresso (both in Balaclava) — where the porridge “absolutely slaps” are firm favourites. At the top of the list sits St Kilda’s Hotel Esplanade, where treasured memories run deep.
“I always love going to The Espy where I played my first gig when I was 14 or 15 and I just love being in St Kilda.”
More fond reflections surface, as G Flip reveals their birthday dinner is always “dad’s spag bol” by request. “He’s been making spaghetti bolognese for me and the family since I was a wee, little baby.”
Sydney favourites
Sydney’s Chin Chin and Spice Alley are among the key Sydney meal stops for the artist and band, who share a passion for “awesome” Asian flavours. And for a parmi as it’s known in Sydney, Chippendale’s The Lord Gladstone — aka The Gladdy — is their pub meal stop of choice.
On the road
A grinding tour schedule necessitates a more programmed approach to sustenance. “I use a lot of energy on stage, so I eat a lot of bananas, protein bars and drink so much water. I just have healthy, filling meals, loaded with protein and carbs. You know, like chicken breast, brown rice, salmon, broccoli. It’s a meat and veg kind of vibe.”
Favourite dish
In late October, G Flip will be back for Melbourne Fashion Week ambassadorial duties which includes showing support for Australian designers and performing at the closing runway. A favoured indulgence — a classic chicken parmigiana paired with a pot of Carlton Draught — is already top of mind.
“I love just getting a pot at my local pub with the fam. And I love a parma.” In Melbourne, G Flip favours Moon Dog (in Footscray, Preston and Abbotsford) and yes, the Hotel Espy parmas are top of their list of favourites.
And just in case there’s a need for it, G Flip’s answer to feeling “really, really, really seedy” – well, that’s a cheeseburger. And make it a double.
