“I was inspired by watching the Fijiana team on television as they get to travel, and they are women playing a physical sport. I knew that I could do the same.”

Krystelle Thaggard did not dream to meet and play against her rugby idol Stacey Waaka in the McDonald’s Fiji Coral Coast 7s tournament at Lawaqa Park, Sigatoka, last weekend.
“I was super proud to see and play against her (Waaka),” she said.
“I shook her hand, and she told me that it was a good game, so I was excited.”
The 18-year-old is originally from Vatukaroa Village in Cakaudrove with maternal links to Nasarawaqa in Bua.
“I play prop for the Lava City Savusavu women’s team, and this was the first time for me to play in the Coral Coast tournament,” she said.
“I learned a lot of skills from other players, and it was a completely new environment for our players playing at Lawaqa Park.”
Thaggard said it was her third year of playing rugby.
“I was inspired by watching the Fijiana team on television as they get to travel, and they are women playing a physical sport. I knew that I could do the same.”
Thaggard said her parents advised her to set her goals and chase her dreams.
“I aspire to don the white jersey in the future. I have to train every day and improve on my weakness from this tournament.”
Thaggard said she would also pursue a career as a physical education (PE) teacher.
“I want to train younger children to get into sports and not just academics most of the time. My advice to other youths out there is to set their goals and manage their time wisely.”
She acknowledged her family back home for their endless support.
