Veteran striker Christopher Wasasala again rescued the Labasa football side in their 5-3 penalty shootout win against Navua in the grand-final of the FMF Inter District Championship at Lautoka’s Churchill Park last night.
Speaking to SUNsports, Wasasala said when he walked up to take that crucial penalty, he was determined to make it count and prove critics wrong.
“I had made up mind that it was going in, as I wanted to salvage my reputation after missing a penalty in our semi-final win,” he said.
“There were a lot of ups and downs going through our team and we had to be strong in the final. I told the boys that I would be the fifth kicker and I would win it for us. I dedicate this win to all Labasa fans out there.”
The other Labasa goals came from the boot of Anish Khem, Sekove Naivakananumi, Rusiate Doidoi and Lekima Gonerau.
Navua’s goals were scored by Ali Mekawir, Filipe Baravilala and Jared Rongosulia while Vineet Chand’s attempt went wide.
An emotional Labasa coach Ravneel Pratap said district pride was what that kept them going.
“We’ve had a tough season but our fans, sponsors and officials were there to back the team. Extra Supermarket our sponsor was always there providing whatever we need.
“To our fans and those that are here are already showing their happiness and that is what we want.”
Pratap said they were blessed because they were able to come back from their 3-0 loss to Navua in the group game to beat them in the final.
“Navua is a good team and they gave us a good game,” Pratap added.
Dubbed the Babasiga Lions, they were captained by 42-year-old goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau.
Labasa returns home today with their $25,000 prizemoney while Navua pockets $6000.
Labasa midfielder Akeimi Ralulu and Saimoni Damuni of Navua were red carded in the second half as both teams played with 10-men.
