Expect changes in the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua Match 23 squad to face NSW Waratahs in Sydney, Australia on Friday night.
After a short six-day turnaround, Drua head coach Glen Jackson confirmed this during a press conference in Nadi yesterday. He’ll announce his Match 23 squad today.
“It’s the philosophy we’ve had in the first four games,” he said.
“We know how tough it is, but also just the rotation of our squad is important because, like I said, we’ve done a lot of work coming back from Napier.”
He said due to the short week, they have no other option but to make changes.
“We’ve had a couple of injuries that are going to affect what we do in terms of our selection,” Jackson said.
Backrower Etonia Waqa could be playing against the Waratahs after he was medically cleared. Waqa is coming off a nine-month injury.
“That is great and he’s an exciting player. Waqa was one of our best players last year and to have him back in contention for selection is outstanding,” Jackson said.
Other players who have been injured and are going to be rested include; co-captain Frank Lomani, Iosefo Masi, and Selestino Ravutaumada.
“Frank has got a bit of a sprained ankle, so he’ll be definitely out this week. Unfortunately, Masi also got a bit of a sprained ankle.
“No serious injuries, but again, it’s two of our great players. Selestino is one week away too, so we’re looking forward to getting some really good guys coming back into our squad, which is just what you’re going to end up with.”
Tabuavou debut
Jackson was happy with former Racing 92 centre Inia Tabuavou who had a good start and recorded the highest tackle count of 12 against the Hurricanes.
“I was happy for him he’s been training hard over the pre-season, coming back from France in the Flying Fijians. To put in a performance like that for his first effort was rewarding not only for him but for us as a coaching staff.”
Jackson said Tabuavou is likely to retain his spot for the Waratah’s clash.
“Well, I think he’s in either as our 12 and 13. We want to make sure that it’s a position that we want some balance around.”
Cirikidaveta leaves
Meanwhile, Drua lock Te Ahiwaru Cirikidaveta has parted ways with the franchise club.
Cirikidaveta is nursing a knee injury and has moved back to New Zealand to be with his pregnant wife. It is understood that to be part of the Drua squad, he has to be living here.
