Volavola acknowledged his parents for their endless support.
Waisea Volavola’s sheer determination and sacrifice earned him a third-place finish for the 3000 metres.
His bronze medal was the first medal for Levuka Public School at this years Fiji Secondary School Fiji Finals athletics competition.
The 18-year-old, Rukuruku Ovalau lad ran barefoot in his event and recorded a time of 9 minutes 55.87 seconds.
“I want to thank my coach Jone Draunidalo who trained me for weeks before the competition,” he said.
“I did not do well in the 1500m senior boys event yesterday (Saturday) so I was determined to race again in the 3000 meters open grade final and I’m pleased with my bronze medal win.”
Volavola acknowledged his parents for their endless support.
“I usually run two miles back in the island from Levuka for training on daily basis. It was quite a challenge on my body but the opportunity to participate in the Coke games for the the first time is what motivated me,” he said.
“I usually hear about the games and watch it on Television but to be able to live is an experience I’m grateful for.”
Volavola would run for two miles from his school in town to St John’s College and return back to his school.
“I ran barefoot on the tracks because I could afford it but I’m more used to it since Year nine,” he said.
“I felt the heat running barefoot on the tracks but the track feels more smooth.”
