Three petition cases remaining

THREE of the 28 petition cases of National General Elections (NGE) in April 2024 are remaining in the High Court.

This comes after the one year deadline of the petition case under the Electoral Act 2018 ends on 31st May.

The cases still pending involve Member of Parliament (MP) for Ngella, Choylin Yim Douglas, Member of Parliament (MP) for East Guadalcanal, Bradley Tovosia and MP West Guadalcanal the late Moses Garu.

The case of MP Douglas is currently undergoing trial, while MP Tovosia’s case awaits a ruling on an application to strike out the petition.

The decision expected to be delivered today at 9:30 am.

The late MP Garu’s case was awaiting a ruling on an application to strike out the case when he unfortunately passed away.

A total of 28 election petitions were filed after the National General Elections held on April 17, 2024 and of these, 26 comprised of national election petitions and 2 provincial petitions.

Private lawyer Gabriel Suri explained that the 12 months period is a law made in parliament but the court is yet to make a determination on that.
