THE Malaita Province Council of Women has successfully established three new Ward Councils of Women in the northern region of Malaita.
The newly formed councils represent Wards 10, 11, and 12, marking a significant milestone in the Council’s efforts to strengthen women’s representation and participation at the grassroots level.
President of the Malaita Province Council of Women Rebecca Awa, officiated in the establishment ceremonies.
In an interview with this paper, she shared the importance of the initiative, highlighting how it helps bridge the gap between women in rural areas and the provincial and national councils.
“This initiative allows women in rural communities to connect and engage directly with the Malaita Provincial Council of Women,” Mrs. Awa said.
“With the formation of these ward councils, women in the rural communities now have designated representatives who can work with the government and bring forward their concerns and ideas.”
Mrs. Awa explained that the structural development is supported by the national government and aims to empower women by providing a clear link between local communities and higher levels of governance.
The establishment of the ward councils was also witnessed by members of the Ward Development Committees (WDCs), whose involvement Mrs. Awa described as vital.
“The Council of Women serves as a gateway for rural women to participate in decision-making and contribute to local development.
“Now that the ward councils are in place, the Ward Development Committees should include them in planning and development discussions at the ward level.”
Mrs. Awa also expressed her gratitude to the Australian-Solomon Islands Partnership Program for supporting the Council’s efforts in setting up the new ward councils.
With this achievement, only thirteen wards in Malaita are yet to establish their own Ward Councils of Women.
