Theft on the rise in Gizo

Theft on the rise in Gizo

A concerning trend in theft cases in Gizo, Western Province have triggered alarm among residents and local authorities, with recent incidents pointing to an emerging crime trend.

Reports from across Gizo Town and surrounding communities highlighted a growing number of break-ins, stealing of belongings, and missing household items in recent weeks.

Gizo Town Clerk Charles Kelly confirmed the issue, saying it mirrors past patterns of increased theft during certain times of the year.

“We’re seeing fresh reports from residents. It’s beginning just like in previous years, where theft cases spike during particular seasons,” Kelly told Solomon Star on Monday.

He revealed that the Gizo Town Council (GTC) office was broken into early this week during a busy day of operations.

“One of our laptops containing important GTC documents and files was stolen. This is a serious loss,” he added.

Frustration is mounting amongst residents, many of whom are calling on the police to increase patrols and take stronger action.

“This isn’t just about losing property, it’s about the safety of our homes,” a local resident Micah Mala said.

Gizo Police believe the rise in crime is partly driven by unemployment and ongoing economic struggles, worsened to date.

Despite these challenges, they emphasized that theft is a serious offence and offenders will be held accountable.

Community leaders and authorities are urging residents to stay alert, form neighborhood watch groups, and work closely with police to deter further incidents.

Some residents fear the situation may worsen, especially with the presence of unfamiliar individuals recently seen in Gizo.

They worry this may signal the start of a new wave of criminal activity.

As investigations continue, leaders are calling for calm, unity, and shared responsibility in keeping the community safe.
