Which pop star currently rules the fashion roost?

The ARIA Awards are usually a fashion backwater where rented dresses, fragrant vintage finds and denim cut-offs collide with disturbing results. This year, British singer Olivia Dean raised the bar – nay, sent it rocketing into the stratosphere – delivering megawatt glamour on the red carpet and on stage. Promoting her album, The Art of Loving, she shone like a resurrected Tina Turner in a gold-fringed dress from Australian designer Rachel Gilbert. Even before opening her mouth, Dean was the star we all want to be every time we head out of the house to go to a party.
If you’re not ready for the blinding glare of the spotlight, resist the call of a well-worn AC/DC T-shirt. Instead, remember that gold separates can be dimmed by teaming them with blue jeans or a black skirt. Underline with black shoes and a belt.
Dean’s fashion lessons extend to her innate understanding of what suits her on stage – choosing, for instance, a hemline and spaghetti straps that showcase, respectively, her legs and arms. If your arms are your best feature, consider teaming gold pants – be sure to keep the cut wide – with a bold, corset-inspired top.
Gold’s always a good investment, with key pieces working back, like neutrals, with other wardrobe essentials once the party season’s over.
