Auki Police in Malaita were shocked to discover a 10-year-old boy consuming kwaso, a locally brewed alcoholic beverage in public with a group of youths during a patrol near the old Auki wharf last week.
According to Malaita Provincial Police Operations Manager, Michael Ramosaea, the boy was seen in the company of older individuals who allegedly forced him to consume the illegal substance.
“It was both shocking and disturbing to see such a young boy drinking kwaso in a public area,” Mr Ramosaea said.
“This child was clearly influenced and pressured by older boys who should have known better.”
He highlighted that the incident is a serious concern and a reflection of a broader social issue.
“This is a juvenile. Our communities must take responsibility to protect children from such harmful behaviors and illegal practices,” he said.
He added, its sad parents and communities are failing to protect the very young from this growing problem.
“It shows that both parents and the our communities are failing to safeguard our young ones from the growing influence of alcohol and peer pressure.”
Mr Ramosaea urged parents and community leaders to step up and play a more active role in ensuring the safety and wellbeing of their children.
He added that the Provincial Crime Prevention Unit remains committed to conducting awareness programs throughout Auki and its surrounding communities.
