Technical assistance for Airlines to commence

The Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) has entered into a 12-month consultancy agreement with IOS Partners signed on May 30, 2025, to provide technical assistance to Solomon Airlines.

This milestone reinforces the Government’s commitment to fortifying the airline’s operational and financial sustainability.

Supported by the World Bank through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), MCA oversee this initiative, designed to deliver strategic, in-depth support as Solomon Airlines undergoes key reforms.

Under the agreement, a comprehensive review and integrated analysis of Solomon Airlines’ operations will be conducted, covering financial structures, fleet management, workforce, and information technology systems.

The objective is to boost operational efficiency, address financial vulnerabilities, and enhance long-term viability, while developing a framework for implementing Community Services Obligation.

A core aspect of this engagement is the implementation of the Solomon Airlines Strategic Plan 2024–2028.

The consultant will work alongside the airline’s leadership and board to ensure the effective execution, paving the way for a financially self-sustaining, professionally managed national carrier tailored to the needs of Solomon Islands.

Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, welcomed the partnership, stating: “The Government is committed to ensuring Solomon Airlines becomes a more efficient, accountable, and sustainable airline that meets both domestic and international expectations. This technical assistance will provide much-needed expertise to guide the airline through strategic reforms while strengthening its capacity to serve our people and support national development goals.”

Recognizing the strategic role of a reliable national airline in a geographically dispersed nation,  this collaboration is expected to equip Solomon Airlines with the tools, insights, and operational capacity needed to secure a stronger future.

By enhancing efficiency and aligning with industry best practices, Solomon Airlines will be better positioned to contribute to the country’s’ economic and social development.

In addition to this technical support, SIRAP2 is currently advancing a range of critical infrastructure investments across the country.

These include: construction of Noro Roads and four new bridges in Malaita, upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, investments in air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, maintenance of regional airports, rehabilitation of 21 km of East Road between Baratolo and Atori, and the sealing of 12 km of the North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.
