Fiji Junior Vonu Under-17 full forward Makayla Sukhu hopes to follow in her mother’s footsteps in the sport of Australian Football League (AFL).

This is after her mother Vilisi Sukhu was part of the first women’s Fiji Vonu team in 2014.

“AFL is a different sport, and my mum was the main reason why I took up this sport because she represented Fiji,” she said,

“I’ve always enjoyed this sport even from when I was younger.”

Sukhu said she learnt that team bonding and the endurance level was vital for the sport.

“This sport has really brought out key factors because AFL is different sports in one.

“I really hope that I’ll be able to help my sister play this sport.”

Sukhu is hopeful that the sport would grow in the country.

“It’s a multi-skill sport as it’s quite challenging at first but you’ll be able to carry through,” she said.

“My mum told me to keep pushing hard as long as I focus on my goals and encourage my team-mates.”

Sukhu had won the Women’s Candidate Master (WCM) title for the country at the 45th World Chess Olympiad at Budapest, Hungary from September 10 – 23.

“I was the youngest member and winning 3.5 out of 7, I managed to get a title from this first outing competition against 193 countries,” she said.

“I also play for netball for Suva Grammar School and the Lomaiviti club in the development princess grade.”

Sukhu said it is her second year playing the sport.

“I often have to study and try to balance schoolwork with sports. Sport is good as it gives you a piece of mind and relieves your stress from other things like schoolwork.”

Sukhu acknowledged divine intervention for her achievement in AFL.

“I’d also like to thank my parents for their endless support because they are always here in my corner,” she added.
