In November I went on a bit of a mini-tour with my best friend, we tried Fitzroy Deli in Shortland Street – if you’re a fan of a savoury brunch or a sandwich option, I highly recommend.
Favourite restaurant for dinner with friends?
If I were to plan a night out with friends in Auckland, I would probably go somewhere like Ghost Donkey – especially now that it’s getting warmer – a frozen margarita, good vibes and something for everyone is the making of a great night out.
Favourite place to take a visitor to?
Closer to town – probably the Auckland Art Gallery or a ferry ride to Devonport. Otherwise a day at Wenderholm or some beach-hopping up north is a must.
Favourite spot to finish a night out?
Definitely a kebab shop, can’t go wrong. Or if not out too late, a classic – Giapo for some fancy ice cream.
Favourite place to get coffee?
I’m not a huge coffee drinker but am a big fan of matcha or chai, and I often frequent EJK Café before rehearsals at NZ Opera in Parnell.
Favourite fish-and-chip shop?
I’ve unfortunately (fortunately) been spoilt with fish freshly caught from Saddle Island just outside the Mahurangi Harbour, so we didn’t go to many fish and chip shops that could top that… I had plenty of trips out fishing with my dad, and sometimes a scoop or two of chips from the Puhoi General Store to go with our fish would go down well.
Favourite trail for a hike?
Ōrewa Estuary Walkway is about 8km, easy to do in a morning or afternoon with our family dog, and can finish up with an ice cream or swim – or both. It’s one of my favourite walks to do.
Favourite venue for a gig?
Powerstation has to be one of my favourites. I’ve seen a lot of good gigs there. It’s a great size to enjoy a concert with lots of people, while still maintaining the feel of an intimate venue.
Favourite place to find a bargain?
Warkworth is teeming with op shops and bargains, or if you want a nice Saturday adventure the Matakana markets are great to peruse.
Soprano Michaela Cadwgan performs in NZ Opera’s free Opera in the Park concerts, January 24 at Vellenoweth Green St Heliers and January 31 at the Botanic Gardens, Manurewa.
