Site visit to mitigate traffic challenge amidst road works

A joint site visit to assess on-site traffic management and evaluate the impact of ongoing construction activities on surrounding properties was conducted on Thursday, 12th June.

The tour was conducted along the Tandai Highway (White River to Town Ground) road construction project under the Land and Maritime Connectivity Project (LMCP).

The inspection team comprised representatives from the Ministry of Infrastructure Development Safeguards, the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the LMCP-engaged Construction Supervision Consultant (CSC), and the contractor, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The visit also aimed to ensure that appropriate corrective measures are being implemented to address concerns raised by the public.

Ministry of Infrastructure Development’s Chief Safeguards Officer, Roxsley Basil, stated that key challenges were identified and reviewed, and the contractor was informed of necessary actions to mitigate risks.

“Several corrective actions have already been initiated in response to public concerns, focusing on reducing hazards and enhancing safety for construction workers, road users, and the community.”

He further emphasized, “Moving forward, continuous monitoring will be essential to minimize potential risks and improve overall site management.”

Another meeting was convened on Monday with business houses along the Townground-Rove road corridor.

Mr. Basil said shop owners have expressed concerns about the ongoing construction and its impact on their daily income and operational costs.

Businesses affected

“We are committed to working closely with business houses to address these issues and implement effective traffic management strategies.

“Ensuring minimal disruption during this critical stage of the project is our priority,” the Safeguards officer said.

CCECC is scheduled to begin asphalt paving from the Heritage Park Hotel Roundabout to the Townground Roundabout in the coming days. This works will subsequently extend towards Rove Outback over the upcoming months.

These road rehabilitation activities also mark the government’s preparations to host the upcoming Pacific Islands Forum Summit come September.
