SICCI welcomes investment push in country’s seaweed industry

The Solomon Islands Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SICCI) has expressed strong support for renewed government efforts to boost the country’s seaweed industry, following an announcement by the Minister of Fisheries, Hon. Bradley Tovosia, in Parliament earlier last week.

As the leading body representing private sector development in the Solomon Islands, SICCI welcomed the minister’s announcement and reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the Ministry of Fisheries to strengthen and expand the industry.

In line with these efforts, SICCI has already established a dedicated Seaweed Industry Working Group, made up of local seaweed farmers. This group has been tasked with providing oversight and fostering vital linkages between farmers and buyers at domestic, regional, and international levels.

SICCI emphasized that collaboration between the Ministry of Fisheries and the Working Group will be critical in developing a robust and sustainable seaweed farming sector.

“We are optimistic that with proper coordination and support, the seaweed industry has the potential to create significant economic opportunities for our rural communities. “This partnership is key to improving livelihoods and enhancing the export potential of Solomon Islands’ marine resources, SICCI said in a statement.”

Seaweed farming is increasingly being recognized as a viable economic activity in the Solomon Islands, particularly for coastal communities seeking sustainable and environmentally friendly income-generating options.

SICCI concluded by urging all stakeholders to work together to build a strong foundation for the growth of this promising industry.
