The Solomon Islands Women’s National Basketball Team suffered defeat in their opening match of the 2025 FIBA Melanesian Cup, going down 63-30 to New Caledonia on Monday at the Friendship Hall in Honiara.
It was a tough start for the hosts, who managed only three points in the opening period as New Caledonia raced to a commanding 22-3 lead.
Coach Gregory Ofia’s side gradually found their rhythm and managed to close the gap at times, but the 2022 bronze medalists maintained their class and dominance throughout the contest.
Speaking after the match, Coach Ofia commended his players despite the loss, praising their effort and ability to contain their opponents for much of the game.
“Despite our short preparation time before the tournament, the girls have picked up very well. They did their best against New Caledonia, who are a top Melanesian side,” he said.
“Most of my players are new, but they have blended well with our few senior players. With the performance shown today, along with their growing skill and confidence, we’ll work on our mistakes and come back stronger.”
Ofia also thanked the local supporters who turned out in numbers to cheer on the team.
“A huge thanks to the local supporters who came out today to support the girls. We might not have many local competitions for women, but your cheering and encouragement mean a lot to the team,” he added.
The Solomon Islands will face 2022 champions Fiji in their second match on Tuesday at 6:30 pm, again at the Friendship Hall.
Meanwhile, in the other women’s fixture of the day, 2022 runners-up Papua New Guinea (PNG) made a strong start with a dominant 82-36 win over Vanuatu.
