Selling your home? Use these tricks a property stylist applied to her own ’70s villa

A 1970s home is given a makeover to render it perfect for modern life.

“The light, from Zara Home UK, cost double its worth in postage but I knew it was the perfect ‘hero’ piece to complete my vision,” says Elyce Lovell. Credit: Armelle Habib

The home
A two-bedroom brick villa in Melbourne’s inner north.

Who lives here
Elyce Lovell, senior interior stylist with The Real Estate Stylist, her husband Mitch, a plumber, and their dog Charlie.

What we did
“We reconfigured the space to create an open-plan living, dining and kitchen area, renovated the kitchen and bathroom and added French doors that open to the courtyard,” says Lovell. “We then made cosmetic changes like removing the ’70s carpet, sanding the floorboards, painting and adding new window furnishings.”

Our favourite room
“The open plan living, dining and kitchen space as it’s where we spend our time together, and host family and friends for dinner,” says Lovell.

The ’hood
“We love the beautiful streets filled with heritage homes; the vibrancy of High Street, and the walking paths along Merri Creek.”

Future plans
“We want to utilise our skills and keep creating beautiful spaces to enjoy, so we’ll do another renovation project.”

Best advice
“Try not to get overwhelmed by all the choices out there,” says Lovell. “Get excited by pieces or designs you connect with instead.”
