’SECOND HIGHWAY PLEASE’

’SECOND HIGHWAY PLEASE’

SOLOMON Islands Government through the Government of National Unity and Transformation (GNUT) regime has been urged to consider constructing a second major road corridor or highway to ease the daily traffic congestion in the city.

The Honiara City Council (HCC) Lord Mayor, Cr Edward Siapu expressed the city’s desperate situation at the packed national stadium in East Honiara on Monday.

This was during the colourful celebration of the country’s 47th Independence Day Anniversary commemoration.

“As Honiara’s population continues to expand, we urge the government to urgently consider the development of a second major road corridor or highway through Honiara to ease congestion and increase local connectivity.

“This is no longer a luxury, it’s a necessity,” Lord Mayor Siapu said.

He added, that HCC also recognizes the contribution of the Community Access and Urban Service Enhancement (CAUSE) Post Project, whose grass-level infrastructure work, including road upgrades, footpaths and drainage improvements, continues to make a meaningful impact on the daily lives of citizens.

“These interventions are slowly but surely shaping Honiara into a modern, inclusive city that serves all citizens,” Lord Mayor Siapu said.

He also took the opportunity to acknowledge and commend the national government for its continuous support to Honiara city, particularly in hosting major international and regional meetings, supporting events such as the Pacific Games and state-level programs in the capital city.

“These events have brought respect to Honiara, attracted global attention and, more importantly, resulted in a long-hauling advancement throughout urban infrastructure and cityscape.

“I particularly wish to recognize the trans-occupational upgrades in urban infrastructure spearheaded by both past and current governments, improve roads and enhance accessibility, reduce travel time and strengthen urban mobility,” he said.

Daily traffic congestion has long been a challenge for Honiara.

Yesterday following the celebration at King George and Panatina, the traffic congestion was also experienced due to large number of vehicles.

Further down at Panatina Plaza to Kukum roundabout, traffic congestion was also witnessed due to flooding brought about by yesterday’s heavy showers.

A Honiara resident who attended the celebration, agreed with the call, saying the city is expanding and its time for the national government to work with its partners to consider expanding the current highway.
