The Solomon Islands Cricket Federation (SICF) has kicked off its School Cricket Program (SCP) 2026 to schools in Honiara.
The School Cricket Program (SCP) is an initiative aimed at nurturing the next generation of cricketers and building the sport from the grassroots up in the country.
SICF confirmed that the program officially begin with four confirmed schools taking part in the first phase: King George School, Betikama School, Burnscreek School, and Don Bosco Technical Institution.
This was confirmed recently by the SICF President Mr. Sajeewa Liyanage following the Federations successful meeting with the four confirmed schools.
“The Solomon Islands Cricket Federation (SICF) held a meeting with four schools to officially commence the School Cricket Program for the year 2026, together with our newly appointed coach,” Liyanage said.
He said, SICF is pleased to begin school cricket activities this year.
“This program provides a great opportunity for students to experience cricket, the second most popular sport in the world, and to open pathways for future development at national and international levels”.
On behalf of the Solomon Islands Cricket Federation, he acknowledged the strong support and commitment shown by the respective school principals.
“In particular, I would like to extend special thanks to Father Don Bosco Technical School for their valuable support and cooperation.
“We are confident that 2026 will be a very successful year for the Solomon Islands Cricket Federation, especially in the development of school cricket across the country.”
Star Sports understands that, for many students, this will be their first structured introduction to cricket, opening the door to new skills, teamwork, and sporting opportunities.
According to SICF officials, the school program is more than just learning how to bat or bowl. It is designed to promote discipline, teamwork, and healthy lifestyles among young people, while also identifying talented players who could one day represent their communities—and even the nation.
Teachers and school administrators have welcomed the initiative, describing it as a positive step toward expanding sporting options for students in Honiara.
With equipment, coaching support, and regular sessions planned, the program is expected to bring excitement and energy to school sports calendars throughout this year.
Meanwhile, the 2026 SCP roll out marks an important milestone for cricket in the Solomon Islands, signaling a strong commitment to developing the game at the grassroots level—one school, one student, and one cricket bat at a time.
Sessions are already kicked off at the Betikama School last week.
