“My parents often advise me to be very patient and stay determined in my rugby journey regardless of the challenges.”
Silktails front row Kaveni Roseru.
Silktails front row Kaveni Roseru took his time to try out sevens rugby after he featured for the Under-19 Senikau club in the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament last week.
“I don’t really play sevens rugby as I’m more used to playing rugby league,” he said.
“I played in the flanker position for Naitasiri Secondary School during the Deans rugby competition last year.”
Roseru said he also played rugby league for the schools U19 side during the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition.
“We lost to Ratu Kadavulevu School in the quarterfinal in rugby league and rugby union in the same year,” he said.
“I started playing rugby league in secondary school and I was approached by Fiji Bati head coach Wise Kativerata after the U19 final.”
Roseru represented the Junior Fiji Bati team last year that played against visiting Australian Schoolboys team.
“We were then selected and recruited as rookies to the Kaiviti Silktails team,” he said.
“I was so grateful and blessed to be part of the Silktails team and it’s my second year playing for the club in the Jersey Flegg competition.”
Roseru, 19, from Nukuloa village, Naitasiri and has maternal links to Lutu also in Naitasiri.
“I’m so grateful to God for sporting talent that I have,” he said.
“My parents often advise me to be very patient and stay determined in my rugby journey regardless of the challenges.”
Roseru had advised youths to obey their parents as opportunities will come their way.
“I usually walk or ran from the village to school for training, but I never gave up or lost hope because I knew that I had potential in rugby,” he said.
“I have a target to secure a contract to play overseas in the National Rugby League (NRL) competition.”
Roseru said he learnt a lot playing in the Jersey Flegg competition.
“The tempo of the competition is completely different as its fast paced,” he said.
“Whenever I’m in doubt or feel overcome, I recall my parents struggles which is my daily motivation to push on.”
Roseru said discipline has been the core lesson that he learnt from rugby league and often practices disciplined behavior on and off the field.
“I look up Fiji Bati second row Viliame Kikau as he also plays in the backrow position,” he said.
“I hope to represent the Fiji Bati team in the future when I watched them play on home soil two months ago.”
