TUI Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu is the Fiji’s next President.
Taking up the role from outgoing President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, Ratu Naiqama received massive support from members of Parliament yesterday where 37 of the 53 votes were cast in his favour.
Ratu Naiqama won against Opposition nominee and Vuda chief Ratu Meli Tavaiqia who received the Bloc 16 votes.
After the appointment, Ratu Naiqama was congratulated by the Coalition Government and nine Opposition members who voted for the Tui Cakau.
Leading the congratulatory messages, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka said the Coalition partners had shown their support for Ratu Naiqama.
“I had received prior to the nomination, the support of my Coalition partners which was very encouraging.”
He said Ratu Naiqama was also voted by the people.
“We in Parliament we are also an electoral college.
“We carry the mandate of the people and thereby appoint the President.”
National Federation Party leader and Deputy Prime Minister Biman Prasad said the appointment of Ratu Naiqama would be a unifying force for Fiji.
Mr Prasad also called out those political commentators who were against Ratu Naiqama’s appointment because of his alleged involvement in the 2000 coup.
“We are government that is promoting truth and reconciliation.
“How can we promote truth and reconciliation if we keep going back to the past. I believe that it is time that we move forward together and ensure that we create a peaceful environment for everyone.”
SODELPA Parliamentary leader Viliame Gavoka said Ratu Naiqama brought stability to Parliament.
“He is very experienced in governance and Fiji can be assured of stability under his presidency,” said Mr Gavoka.
“I also wish to pay tribute to Ratu Wiliame Katonivere a tower of strength during some very trying times for our nation.”
Ratu Naiqama will be sworn in on November 11.
