The Fiji women’s football team needs to dig deep if they are to stand any chance of winning the OFC Women’s Nations Cup.
This was after defending champions Papua New Guinea beat Samoa 2-1 in their Group A opener at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.
PNG led 2-0 at halftime with two quick goals for Marie Kaipu while Samoa scored their lone goal to Xevani Salanoa.
Impressive for PNG was midfielders Michaelyre Butubu who set-up Kaipu’s first goal and 2022 golden boot winner Ramona Padio.
In their earlier clash, minnows Cook Islands came from behind through Tearoa Rouru equaliser to hold favourites Tahiti 1-1. The Tahitians had taken an early lead through a Kohai Mai goal.
PNG head coach Komeng said they are hoping to meet Fiji later in the tournament.
“The girls are looking forward,” Komeng said.
“It’s going to be tough against the best of the Pacific but we will see how it goes but I have a quality side, and I’m confident. I do believe in the girls.”
Today, the Angeline Chua-coached-Fiji side must beat Solomon Islands in their Group B opener at Suva’s HFC Bank Stadium. The opening match is at 4pm between Vanuatu and Tonga.
