The late Josaia Raisuqe’s parents Tevita and Mereani Raisuqe and partner Ilona Valette were joined by his teammates and Fijian rugby players at a church service yesterday to honour his life.

The service was held at Pompes Funèbres Alizés, a funeral home in Castres, France.

It was attended by Top 14 and Pro D2 players including Leone Nakarawa, Jiuta Wainiqolo, Aminiasi Tuimaba, Josua Vici, Asaeli Tuivuaka, Vinaya Habosi, Tevita Ratuva, Lekima Tagitagivalu, Kaminieli Rasaku, Filipo Nakosi, Eroni Sau, Andrea Cocagi, Vilimoni Botitu and Josua Tuisova.

The Fijian community including French Army officers and former national reps were also present.

The 30-year-old Castres Olympique winger and former Fiji 7s Olympic silver medallist was tragically killed in a road accident on May 8.

Mats were spread where his casket was laid and fellow rugby players came to view and pay their last respect. Some signed off their names with their condolences message.

Speaking from France, Wainiqolo said it was a solemn occassion.

“It was an emotional gathering.”

His body, accompanied by his parents is expected to depart France tomorow for the final burial rites in his village in Lutu, Naitasiri. Funeral details are yet to be confirmed.

His parents were also present at Stade Chaban-Delmas to watch the game between Castres and Bordeaux last Saturday; it was Castres’ first match following the tragic death of Raisuqe.

Following the match, players from both sides came together for an emotional on-field rendition of the gospel song We Shall Overcome.

The Castres Olympique club covered the expenses of their trip.

The late Raisuqe made seven appearances for Castres this season, his final game played just days before the tragic accident.
