People | ‘I love calculation’ | Sereima opts for a career in finance – The Fiji Times

AFTER four years of hard work and dedication, Sereima Tuvou is set to reap the rewards of her labour.

The 24-year-old lass from Nadroga is among students who would be graduating from the University of the South Pacific in April.

Despite the obstacles she faced in her education journey, her determination had always egged her on.

Growing up, she was a patient and observant young girl, intrigued by any wonderful opportunity that came her way

“Life growing up was tough but as always, the presence of our loved ones allowed us to move forward together,” she said.

“I’m forever grateful to my parents for teaching my siblings and I good values in life and the important lessons needed to survive in this world.

“Their prayers and strength made me the woman I am today and for that, I’m thankful.”

From a young age, teaching was a career she wanted to pursue. But that passion fizzled out as she aged.

“I remember when our teacher would ask what we would want to be when we grow up, my answer was always to become a teacher.

“My love for children made me choose this career but as time crept in, this decision and dream of mine slowly faded.”

And soon after completing her secondary education at Mahatma Gandhi High School in Suva, she quickly became intrigued by the world of financing.

“In high school, I opted to study accounting as one of my subjects and I never regretted it.

“The subject made me love this field even more and nothing can ever change that.”

Ms Tuvou later studied bachelors in accounting and international business marketing.

“Funny thing is accounting and finance was my choice and IBM wasn’t. That course was suggested to me when I enrolled at USP so I accepted and never looked back once.

“The reason why I wanted to study accounting was because I love to deal with financial transactions, numbers, values and many more. I’ve always loved calculation and all that.

Having weathered many storms over the past few years, she advises students to take it slow when challenges present themselves.

“I always try to take it slow, be calm and try not to excessively over think everything.

“Time management is important not just at university but everywhere, it helps to reduce the chances of facing problems during studies.

As graduation day inches closer, Ms Tuvouis is feeling excited about receiving her degree.

“I feel so happy and emotional and I wanted to cry at the same time. I know I’m no longer stressing.”

Ms Tuvou hopes to see her family and friends support her on graduation day.

During her free time, watching movies and socialising with her close friends are hobbies she enjoys.

In the next five years, she hopes to be employed at an accounting firm, further her studies and inspire the younger generation.

Ms Tuvou’s one advice to those wanting to pursue her field is to never give up and keep moving forward.

“Accounting is a little tough, but you should never give up, no matter the challenges you face.

“You must keep trying until you reach the success you’re looking for.”
