A NZME photographer on the scene said the fire broke out in a two-storey building.
“Police were called to assist Fire and Emergency New Zealand just after 8pm,” a spokesperson said.
Motorists were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.”
Senior station officer Rusbridge told an NZME photographer on scene a derelict two-storey building was well involved in fire.
“Upon arrival, we saw fire coming out of two rear windows and as we were getting to work, the fire came out of one of the roof sections,” he said.
Rusbridge said 15 appliances were on site at one point and fire investigators were requested.
A witness told the Herald the firefighters were doing a fantastic job against such a large blaze.
He said the fire spread to the second floor of the house, which he believed took place in an empty shop.
