The Waikato Times is the daily newspaper and news website based in Waikato and the Bay of Plenty, in New Zealand. We are the original influencers. On the tools since 1872 and telling it like it is. Every day we make history with the people of the region, telling the stories of our region. We are non-conformist, we speak uncomfortable truths and we cut through the crap on behalf of our readers. We love shaping the conversations in the Waikato and Bay of Plenty and poking into dark and difficult corners to dust off the truth and shed new light on important issues. We are unafraid, unequivocal and ultimately all about our own backyard. We are The talk of the region, te reo o Waikato.

Our team of reporters and video journalists cover Hamilton City and greater Waikato, from the azure waters of Lake Taupo to the pumping surf at Raglan, across the motu to Coromandel and as far north as Port Waikato. We focus on what matters to our region like our rapid population growth and what that means for readers. Local authorities are held to account while we cast a critical eye on local crime and the wheels of the justice system. Rural issues affect everyone who lives in Waikato so we turn our hand to those stories too, keeping our rural and town dwellers in mind.

History
The Waikato Times was founded on the promise of political independence and the exchange of ideas. Its founder George Jones pledged to expose “all social and political abuses”.

The first edition of the Waikato Times chugged off the press in Ngāruawāhia on May 2, 1872. The Times shifted from Ngāruawāhia to Hamilton Kirikiriroa in 1875 and continued to flourish into the next century covering the assassination of John F Kennedy, the Moon landing, the attacks on the Twin Towers and closer to home, the Springbok Tour pitch invasion.

In 2011, the paper switched from afternoon to morning publication and in 2015 staff moved into new premises in downtown Hamilton. Jonathan MacKenzie has been in the editor’s chair since 2010.
