The Fiji men’s rugby sevens team is driven by the motto that ‘nothing is impossible’ as they prepare for the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles from May 3-5.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday head coach Osea Kolinisau said, they are motivated by the fact that nothing is impossible, if they put in the hard work.
He said the mood in camp was positive, focused and their belief that impossible is nothing.
“The boys came in with no major injuries, which is good news,” the coach said.
“A couple of minor knocks, but the players are in rehab and will be joining training tomorrow.”
After a physically challenging week, under adverse weather conditions at the Sigatoka sand dunes, the squad has been trimmed to 22 players, who are all in contention for a spot for the Los Angeles tournament.
“We’re still working on communication, knowing when to fold, when to hold. It’s the small things that make the big difference” said Kolinisau
“I told the boys, this is straight to the semifinals, so you can’t afford to lose a game. Win every match to lock down the top spot.”
Facing New Zealand and Spain in their pool, the Fijians know of the mammoth task ahead of them but they are going to take them head on.
A major boost to the side is the return of veteran playmaker Waisea Nacuqu.
“Nacuqu brings calmness, direction, and a deep understanding of the game. He moves the ball well and reads the field brilliantly. Nacuqu is serious when he needs to be, but off the field, he keeps the atmosphere light.
“The younger boys are always giggling around him, it’s great to see that kind of leadership helping the team gel,” Kolinisau said.
He indicated that players are constantly reminded in camp that talent alone isn’t enough.
“Fitness, discipline, and attitude are just as important,” he added.
“In sevens, fitness is non-negotiable. You could be the best in your position, but if you’re unfit, you’re no use. I’d rather take someone who gives me 100 per cent than someone who gives 70 per cent. That’s the standard.”
