A new training hub is set to be constructed in Saeragi, West Gizo, Western Province with the aim of equipping local school dropouts and community members with practical skills and knowledge in environmental planning and resilience.
The initiative, led by WWF Solomon Islands under the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR) Project, will focus on training “Knowledge Progress” (KP) participants—community members who often have limited formal education, including those who left school between Grade 6 and Form 3.
WWF Solomon Islands Programme Coordinator under ACIAR Project Under Australian Government Sled Ririmae told the Solomon Star in an interview that the goal is to provide education and empowerment to those who may have missed out on traditional pathways.
“Education is for everyone. This hub will be a place to uplift our KBs with diverse training opportunities that help them grow and reach their full potential,” Mr. Ririmae said.
In a major step forward, WWF Solomon Islands is expected to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Solomon Islands National University (SINU) in July.
The MOU will enable a formal partnership between WWF, ACIAR, and SINU through its Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
Mr. Ririmae explained that under this partnership, KPs in Saeragi will have the opportunity to receive Level 2 certification for their training—marking a significant step in bridging grassroots knowledge with nationally recognized qualifications.
“This collaboration with SINU will help formalize what the KBs are learning and open up more doors for the future,” he said.
The training hub is part of a broader effort to build community resilience against climate change and to empower locals with the tools and knowledge to lead sustainable development initiatives.
Construction of the Saeragi Training Hub is expected to begin soon.
