New rescue fire service station at airport makes progress

The construction of the new Rescue Fire Service Station at Honiara International Airport is progressing well.

Supported by the World Bank through the Second Solomon Islands Roads and Aviation Project (SIRAP2), the contract is being implemented by the Ministry of Communication and Aviation (MCA) with China Railway Construction Engineering Group contracted to undertake the work.

Once completed it would contribute to improve safety and climate resilience of the Solomon Islands’ aviation sector.

A major milestone was achieved recently with the successful completion of concrete works for the tie beams, strip footing, and pad footing – critical structural components forming the foundation of the facility.

This accomplishment followed comprehensive preparatory activities, including rigorous quality assurance protocols and site inspections.

With the foundation work concluded, construction has advanced to the next stage, focusing on the remaining concrete works and structural elements. All construction activities are being undertaken in accordance with established engineering and international safety standards, ensuring the integrity and resilience of the facility.

The Permanent Secretary of MCA, Alwyn Danitofea, underscored the strategic significance of the development: “The new Rescue Fire Services Station at Honiara International Airport is vital for ensuring passenger and crew safety, meeting international aviation standards, and maintaining operational continuity.

“It will enhance the airport’s emergency response capabilities, protect the environment, and position the airport as a critical hub for disaster response in Solomon Islands. This infrastructure will also boost confidence among airlines, travelers, and the local community in the safety and efficiency of air travel in our country.”

Beyond the Rescue Fire Service Station, SIRAP2 is delivering a transformative portfolio of infrastructure investments across Solomon Islands.

These include the construction of Aviation complex Building, Noro Roads Improvement and four new bridges in Malaita, upgrades to Honiara and Munda Airports and Santa Cruz and Suavanao Airfields, installation of air navigation systems in Makira-Ulawa and Temotu Provinces, maintenance of regional airports, rehabilitation of 21 kilometers of the East Road between Baratolo and Atori, and sealing of 12 kilometers of the North Road between Auki Gwaunaru’u Airfield Junction and Kwaisuliniu Road Junction.

These investments are designed to improve climate resilience, enhance connectivity, and improve the safety and efficiency of strategic transport infrastructure nationwide.
