The University of the South Pacific’s (USP), Centre for Sustainable Futures (CSF), is placing interdisciplinary research at the heart of its mission to address the Pacific’s most pressing sustainability challenges.
By bringing together diverse disciplines such as environmental science, marine studies, applied sciences, and social development, the Centre aims to drive collaborative, innovative, and practical solutions to the region’s climate and sustainability issues.
USP alumna and researcher, Noella Dorevella, who is currently working on the Pacific Ocean and Climate Crisis Assessment (POCCA) project at the Centre, strongly believes that this integrated approach is key to building a resilient and sustainable Pacific.
“Combining expertise from areas like environmental science, economics, sociology, and urban planning leads to more effective decision-making and impactful policies,” Dorevella said.
“The Centre for Sustainable Futures (CSF) reflects USP’s commitment to collaboration, innovation, and holistic climate action.”
Dorevella noted that by uniting key USP units – the Pacific Centre for Sustainable Development (PaCE-SD), the Institute of Marine Resources (IMR), the Institute of Applied Sciences (IAS), and the Discipline of Marine Studies – under one umbrella, the Centre is better positioned to address the complex, interconnected nature of climate change and sustainable development.
“Interdisciplinary research helps us not only to understand the challenges but also to create real solutions that work for Pacific communities,” she added. “It’s about connecting different perspectives to get a fuller picture, and then acting on it.”
She also encouraged students to take advantage of the unique opportunities offered by CSF.
“If you’re thinking of studying climate change or another programme under CSF, I highly encourage you to apply.”
“You’ll gain valuable skills, broaden your horizons, and work with others who are passionate about creating a better, more sustainable future.”
