“Mum went over the front of the car and Sue got flung sideways. Both the dogs got hit,” he said.
The 27-year-old’s dog Luna, a huntaway cross, ran away while his mum’s friend’s dog Mackay was injured during the incident.
Prouse found out after a neighbour rang to tell him what happened.
“I had got up, made a coffee, was waiting for it to plunge through when I got a call,” he said.
“I had this frantic, ‘Mum’s been hit, dog’s gone. We’re in the ditch, you need to get here now’.
“I almost left the door in my dressing gown. But I ran downstairs, chucked on some shorts, the shirt didn’t even really make it on and I just ran.”
When the 27-year-old arrived at the scene, his mother was in a ditch.
“It was the worst image you could have of your parents,” he said.
“It was panic and then rage that someone could have treated your family like that and left them.”
His mother remains in hospital with several broken ribs and fractures.
“I don’t know how she came away as unscathed as she did,” he said.

Prouse’s dog Luna was found by a neighbour who saw her walking along the road, picked her up in the car and returned her.
However, the other dog remains in a worse condition at the vet.
“It has injuries to its bones, lungs, hips and jaw,” Prouse said.
Police are now working to identify the driver of the vehicle that struck the women.
“The ute was travelling on Attwood Rd towards Paremoremo Rd,” police said.
“It sustained some damage in the crash, which will likely be noticeable.”
Police are urging anyone with information about the vehicle or its driver to come forward.
They would also like to speak to any witnesses who have not yet spoken to them.
Prouse also wants the person found.
“The longer you leave it, the harder it gets,” he said.
“They’re a coward if they’re going to drive off.”
