RESIDENTS of the Gold Ridge and Turarana areas in Central Guadalcanal will no longer need to cross the Tinahulu River by foot.
Early this week, they celebrated the opening of a new multi-million-dollar bridge at Tinahulu.
It was constructed by Wanguo International Mining Group Limited in collaboration with the Ministry of Infrastructure Development using tax credits.
Wanguo International Mining Group Limited, the primary owner of Gold Ridge Mining Limited (GRML), holds a 70 percent stake in the company, with AXF Resources owning 20 percent and Gold Ridge landowners holding the remaining 10 percent.
Minister of Finance and Treasury Manasseh Sogavare, who was the guest speaker at the event, highlighted the significance of the bridge.
He said it serves as a vital connection for local communities.
Minister Sogavare said the theme of the event, “Bridging Communities, Connecting the Future,” aptly described the project’s purpose.
He hailed the broader impact of Chinese investment in Solomon Islands, saying, “Chinese companies are helping to bridge the gap between North-South cooperation.”
He thanked Wanguo for its commitment to developing the bridge, calling it an exemplary public-private partnership.
“This is a fine example of a private investor partnering with the government in infrastructure development. I recognize Wanguo as a model corporate citizen.”
Minister Sogavare assured Wanguo of the government’s respect and support, saying that the government had waived certain regulations to facilitate the bridge’s construction for the benefit of the people.
He thanked the local landowners for opening their land to support the project.
Wanguo Chairman Mingqing Gao expressed his pride in the bridge, describing it as a symbol of the company’s dedication to Gold Ridge.
He said the decision to construct a new bridge was made in 2022 when they encountered the deteriorated state of the previous bridge upon their arrival for mining operations.
Mr Gao said the bridge is not only a transportation link but a crucial element in advancing the development of local communities.
“This bridge will bring convenience to local villages, ensuring they are no longer isolated during heavy rains, allowing the people who have lived here for generations to remain in peace and stability.”
Among those who attended the event were the Minister of Mines, Energy and Rural Electrification and MP for East Guadalcanal Bradley Tovosia, Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade and MP for Central Guadalcanal Peter Shanel Agovaka; Minister of Communication and Aviation Fredrick Kologeto, Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening Wayne Ghemu, Minister for National Planning and Development Coordination Rexon Ramofafia and Premier of Guadalcanal Willie Atu.
