Motion against Premier Veo set

Motion against Premier Veo set

WESTERN Provincial Premier Billy Veo will face a Motion of No-Confidence (MONC) on Wednesday morning.

It’s the first agenda on the order paper to be debated.

The Western Provincial Full Assembly is currently underway at the Imagination Island, off Gizo.

The notice of the Motion was submitted by the Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) for Ward 24 Calrick Runimetu.

He pursued the move after joining the non-executive group following his resignation as finance minister and deputy premier.

Speaker of the Provincial Assembly Ramrakha Aquila Talasasa told the Full Assembly at day one of the meeting that the motion will come before the House on Wednesday.

On Monday MPA for Ward 3 Gideon Tuki raised a point of order seeking the Speaker to consider tabling the motion on Monday before debating the budget.

However, Speaker Talasasa explained the seven days’ notice lapses on Tuesday – 29thOctober which means, the motion can can proceed for debate on Wednesday.

The non-executive group filed the motion more than a week ago, accusing the Premier of gross misuse of power and misappropriation of public funds.

Premier Veo has earlier slammed the motion describing it as having ‘no concrete evidence.’

The Veo’s Alliance for Change, Alignment and Rural Economic Advancement (ACAREA) Government assumed office in January 2023 after the Western Provincial Assembly Election in December 2022.

Premier Veo stated that his executive team is prepared to address any allegations levelled against him.

The premier asserted that he has the support of 15 members, which he believes is enough to defeat the motion.

Further to accusing Premier Veo of gross misuse or neglect of power and misappropriation of public funds, the non-executive group also criticized the premier of having made unilateral decisions on key executive matters.

They also accused the MPA for Ward 25 – Noro Town of failing to address issues such as Gizo’s water crisis, poor road conditions and also failing to utilize investment opportunities that could benefit the province.

Premier Veo on Monday appealed to all MPAs to be united in advancing the interest of the province and its people.

“As leaders, we have a collective responsibility to bring this province forward.

“I know we may have different agendas, different political affiliations, differing views as well as priorities as to how we think Western Province should be progressed.

“We need to understand many of these things just do not happen or materialise overnight.

“Our leadership responsibilities should be people focused. Let us not dwell on our personal differences, preferences or partisan politics which will only serve to stagnate our province,” he said on Monday.
