Ministry eyes March for passing of new employment laws – The Fiji Times

EMPLOYMENT Minister Agni Deo Singh said they are aiming for the Employment Relations Act 2007 and Work Care Bill 2024 to be passed in Parliament in March.

Mr Singh told this newspaper yesterday in Sigatoka there was a process to be followed.

“The consultations, actually through the Employment Relations Advisory Board have been ongoing for the last decade,” Mr Singh said.

“And now we are at a stage where we are.

“We have done the draft.

“Once it has gone through the Employment Relations Advisory Board-appointed subcommittee, and after we have completed this round of consultations it will go back to the Employment Relations

Advisory board and then to the Solicitor General’s Office for full vetting.

“After the vetting, it will then be taken to Cabinet and from Cabinet to Parliament. Our target date is the March Parliament session.”

He said a second round of public consultations will also be held after going through Cabinet.

“Thereafter, the parliamentary process will take place, which means it will be referred to the sector committee, the respective sector committee, that will then go for the final round of public consultations, where, again, the general public, all stakeholders, will have the final say on what they want to see in the law when it is finalised.”

The final submission for the proposed Employment Relations Act 2007 and Work Care Bill is on January 20.
