Melbourne Metro Tunnel LIVE updates: Commuters cheer and chant as trains travel through five new stations

Jackson Davis has dressed up for the occasion, wearing a suit and his Metro Tunnel pins to commemorate the tunnel opening.

“Suits are for a special occasion and because this is such a monumental government project … It’s a very special day,” he said.

“It’s not just for the enthusiasts, it’s for those who have wanted to see a better transport plan being enacted since forever.”

Matthew Boldiston said he’d been following the opening of the tunnel’s stations stage by stage, but was delighted to see it all come together in a single trip.

“It is just a dream come true,” he said.

Adam Bain said he was a high-school student when he first started following the project.

“It’s going to be strange without the anticipation of the Metro Tunnel in my life,” he said.

Bain hasn’t visited the stations yet, saving that for today, but is excited to explore the “five wonders of the Metro Tunnel” at each stop.

“Town Hall, the concourse at Parkville, the shelter at Anzac, the arms thing (artwork) at Arden and the platform at State Library,” he said. “It’s just so exciting to see what the government’s done.”
