Former Balata High School student Rusiate Matai has set a new national record in the men’s high jump.
The Pacific Games gold medallist cleared the bar at 2.10 metres at the Bearcat Invite in Missouri, United States.
The last record of 2.09m was held by Antonio Rahiman. Malakai Kaiwalu equaled the record 2016.
Matai is an Oceania Australia Foundation (OAF) and the Oceania National Olympic Committee (ONOC) scholarship recipient to study and train at Neosho County Community College in Kansas.
He cleared the bar at 2.03m during the Pacific Games 2023 in Honiara, Solomon Islands to win gold for Fiji, he also won gold at the 2024 Coca-Cola Games in Suva.
Also setting a new national record in the same competition is Waisele Inoke. He broke Fiji’s Indoor Men’s Heptathlon record.
