Business Discussions Amid Motion of No Confidence
Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele received a courtesy visit from Peter O’Neil, the former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and current Member of Parliament, in Honiara yesterday.
The meeting occurred as Prime Minister Manele faces a Motion of No Confidence (MONC), submitted by Member of Parlament for Central Honiara, Gordon Darcy Lilo.
Lilo was a former Prime Minister and O’Neil former university coursemate at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG).
The motion, citing loss of confidence in the government’s leadership, is set to mature tomorrow.
During the meeting, MP O’Neil shared investment insights and outlined potential opportunities for bilateral cooperation.
He stressed the importance of strengthening business ties between PNG and the Solomon Islands to create opportunities across multiple sectors.
Prime Minister Manele acknowledged the presence of PNG-owned businesses in Honiara and reiterated his government’s commitment to fostering business partnerships.
He highlighted agriculture and tourism as key sectors for collaboration and investment, emphasizing the Solomon Islands’ current focus on these areas.
The Prime Minister also promoted the Bina Harbor project as a strategic investment opportunity, urging partnerships to accelerate its development.
Prime Minister Manele expressed his gratitude for MP O’Neil’s visit and extended his best wishes for the remainder of his stay.
MP O’Neil is scheduled to depart Honiara tomorrow.
