The Fiji Airways Fiji men’s and women’s rugby sevens teams have qualified for the HSBC SVNS World Championship in Los Angeles from May 3-4.
After the elimination series in Singapore, Argentina and New Zealand have claimed the men’s and women’s titles. The focus now is on the World Championship where the Series winners will be decided.
The top eight men’s and women’s team have qualified for the World Championship while those who have dropped will now play in the HSBC Sevens Challenger to determine the teams that make it to the 2025/26 HSBC SVNS.
It was the Fiji men’s rugby sevens side that hoisted the Singapore Sevens tournament with a 21-12 win over Kenya in the Cup final on Sunday night.
The Fijians were behind 0-7 at halftime from a Nygel Pettersam Amatisa’s converted try.
However the Sevuloni Mocenacagi-captained side hit back with three second half tries- two to Viwa Naduvalo and the third to Rauto Vakadranu, which was all converted for a 21-7 lead despite the Kenyans coming back with a consolation try to William Mwanji Indakalu.
“They Kenyan team was coming very hard, they are a good side and very physical,” said Fiji forward Tira Wilagi Patterson.
Super sub winger Naduvalo was named Player of the Final for the second time.
Meanwhile, the Fiji women’s side walloped Great Britain 43-14 to finish seventh.
The Great Britain side led 14-12 at halftime before Richie Walker’s coached-side found their mojo to come back in style to register a big win with Vika Nakacia scoring a hat-trick of tries while Adita Milinia, Kereleyani Lutu, Ilisapeci Delaiwau and Mitchell Seruvatu scored a try each.
