Caines Jannif studios
The closing down of Caines Jannif photographic business for 120 years of service to the community has come to an end (FT 4/11). I can still recall when films used to be developed in a few days time and we always look forward to see. During my years in primary school in Toorak we usually have our class photo. I can still remember the camera man with his tripod stand, camera attached, will cover his head/face with a black cloth, count three and take our photo. During the cub and scouts get together, Ben Jannif who was then the Chief Scout Commissioner would also attend our camp fire get together at night. I’m still keeping my photo taken at the old Caines Studios in downtown Suva during my 6th birthday. Of course it’s black and white, good quality and well framed. To the Caines and Jannif family, thank you so much for your quality service during the years of operation. Have a blessed Christmas and a blessed New Year Fiji. Vili Yaranamua, Ba
No substance
Rajend Naidu is digressing from the issue of killing of animals. The argument using Hitler and Jews has no substance. Rakesh Chand Sharma, Nadi
Rabuka and Fong Chew
I can’t understand why PM Rabuka takes umbrage over acting police commissioner Juki Fong Chew’s “recent remarks that suggested some police officers were corrupt” (FT 21/12). That’s the truth. No good for the police force can come from a denial of that truth. I remember way back after 1987 Rabuka bombastically denied there was any poverty in Fiji (His public statement on this would be in the newspaper archives). I told a DDC (Divisional Development Committee) meeting at the time poverty was a very real phenomenon in the country which I knew from my direct experience as a social welfare officer working with the poor and destitute. Rabuka must stop burying his head in the sand and take proper cognisance of a problem. That is the way to demonstrate good leadership. Rajend Naidu, Sydney, Australia
Happy days!
The colourful image on the front page of The Fiji Times (21/12) portrayed a colourful and multiracial Fijian society. Hats off to Baljeet Singh for the wonderful shot! After the negative impact of the Warwick incident on the tourism industry, it was pleasing to see the smiling faces of our tourists as they joined the locals and Father Christmas at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort during the Christmas tree lighting at Denarau. I took time to also read the messages from PM, National Fire Authority CEO Puamau Sowane, the ‘iron lady’ Shamima Ali, and veteran unionist and the Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra Pal Chaudhry. I thank these seasoned campaigners for their messages. PM acknowledged the vital role played by the civil servants and emphasized on the need for reconciliation between God and humanity. Sowane urged Fijians to be extra cautious both inside and around their homes during the festive season to avoid fires. Ali, while emphasising on assaults, domestic violence and rape against women and girls, encouraged the celebration of resilience of the Fijian people, who despite the hardships faced, demonstrated remarkable strength and perseverance. Chaudhry reiterated the message of hope and goodwill. Indeed, let’s put aside negativity and brace for happy days ahead of us! As we count down days to Christmas, let’s be happy! My apologies Savusavu!
My grand daughter actually turned away from Savusavu Hospital because her favourite nurse who was always kind to her and nice was not on duty the day she went to hospital sick with chickenpox. As of yesterday morning she is admitted into Savusavu Hospital and she’s hoping that her favourite nurse will be there to see her through. So my apologies for the incorrect information earlier in the FT of 21/12 in saying that she was turned away because of a lack of a paediatrician! Noleen Billings, Savusavu
PM opens up on coup
Thank you PM for letting us know about how you managed to bring in arms and ammunition for the ’87 coup. Sukha Singh, Labasa
Soul food
Good point Rajend Naidu (FT 21/12 regarding Hitler being a vegetarian which didn’t automatically make him better person. I notice that he was always pictured wearing a tie, and that didn’t make him a gentleman. Another point for Rakesh Sharma to meditate on. Terry Hulme, Russell St, Eastwood, NSW, Australia
