Late fightback not enough as SI men fall to New Caledonia – Solomon Star News

The Solomon Islands Men’s National Basketball Team fell short in their second match of the 2025 FIBA Melanesian Cup, going down 58-49 to defending champions New Caledonia at the Friendship Hall in Honiara on Tuesday night.

The visitors took control from the outset, dominating most of the opening quarters and heading into halftime with a 32-24 lead.

Despite missing their most efficient player from the previous match, Max Grantham, the hosts rallied in the second half through captain Alex Masae and 20-year-old star point guard Bart Kirby Basia.

However, the 2022 champions managed to hold on to claim their first win of the tournament.

Speaking after the match, head coach Michael Nao praised his team’s progress despite the loss.

“It was a good game, a really good game. We usually lose to them by 20, 30, even 60 points. I think the last time we played, we lost by 60 points,” he said.

“For us, even though it’s a loss, it feels like a win. Losing by just nine points is a big improvement from our past performances, so we’re really proud of that and will work hard for the next game.”

Nao, who has long been involved in the national basketball setup, also spoke about the sport’s development in the country.

“The young players have really improved a lot drastically. With more competitions, overseas exposure, and proper training, basketball in the Solomon Islands is really growing,” he said.

Cheered on by a passionate home crowd that packed the Friendship Hall, the coach also expressed gratitude to families, friends, and supporters for their continued backing.

Both the men’s and women’s national teams will have a rest day on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday evening.
