Laselevu eyes medal at Fiji Finals

Iowane Laselevu has set his goal to win a medal at the Fiji Finals from April 24-26.

The Lomary Secondary School lad won the senior boys 800 metres event during the Suva Zone Two competition yesterday.

Laselevu hails from Galoa, Serua, and shares maternal links to Saliadrau in Namosi.

He said beating top athletes from Suva Grammar School and Marist Brothers High School was the highlight of the two-day meet.

“I did not want to regard anybody else, I only prayed to God to help me through this event,” he said.

Laselevu indicated he was not training for athletics but rugby league.

After they lost last week, Laselevu switched to athletics.

“Only two days ago I was told to participate,” he said.

“I ran in the 400m in last year’s zone meet but did not make it to the finals. Our 4x400m intermediate boys relay team made it to the Games but we did not win any medal.

“I’m aiming for a medal this year in the 800m after finishing eighth in last year’s final.”
