For the Kwong siblings, sport is more than competition it’s a shared passion and a family journey.

The siblings are from Bucalevu, Ra and share maternal ties to Motusa in Rotuma, and they’re proud to represent their heritage on the international stage.

Charis Kwong, 18, and his younger sister Theola, 16, have been selected to represent Fiji at the upcoming Pacific Mini Games in Koror, Palau, both in triathlon and swimming events.

Charis will compete in the sprint triathlon and the mixed relay, she has been preparing for ever since the conclusion of the 2023 Pacific Games. While the training has intensified with morning and afternoon sessions, Charis remains focused and motivated.

“Out of the three disciplines, swimming is definitely my strength,” she said.

For the sisters, this will be their first international competition. Both have trained in swimming for nearly seven years and are now taking their skills to the next level in the triathlon arena.

Theola shares that preparations have been tough, especially the early morning ones but the experience has been rewarding.

“We’re ready,” she said.

The Kwong siblings are homeschooled through the ACE programme, which allows them the flexibility to manage both academic and athletic commitments.
