The Lakeba rugby sevens team halfback Samuela Ledua is determined to represent the country.
The 20-year-old hails from the village of Waitabu in Lakeba, Lau.
Speaking to SUNsports yesterday, Ledua said it was a dream come true for him and the club to play in their first Fiji Bitter Marist Sevens tournament.
“The competition has been an eye-opener for me,” he said.
“Coming from a small maritime island, it is indeed an experience to be playing against the best clubs in the country.”
Ledua said the team traveled all the way from Lakeba to be part of the tournament.
“Most of us have always been in the islands.
“It’s either we would be unemployed and look for sources of income through selling produce or we turn to sports with the hope of a secured future,” he said.
When asked about his sports idol, Ledua said: “I’m always a big fan of Jerry Tuwai; the way he plays is out of this world.”
He aims to broaden his knowledge of the game by playing in more tournaments with the hope to represent Fiji one day.
“I’d love to play for Fiji, it is my dream,” Ledua added.
In the past Lakeba has produced some of the country’s top rugby players like Ilisoni Taoba, Simon Raiwalui, Akapusi Qera, Jiko Matawalu, Henry Qiodravu and the list gone on.
