The commission of inquiry that was tasked to investigate the death of boxer Ubayd Haider will provide an update today.

This was confirmed yesterday by chairman Edwin Wainiqolo.

Wainiqolo indicated the South Pacific Boxing Promotion (SPBP) promoter Freddy Chand has not been interviewed yet.

“At the moment we have investigated all locals that associated themselves to the bout that evening. It includes all the three local referees that were engaged by IBO (International Boxing Organisation),” he said.

“It also included the family of the deceased.”

Wainiqolo said a formal release would be done once all the interviews are completed.

“Both the promoter and financier are the two that actually remains,” the Lautoka lawyer said.

He added the date of the final report for the investigations is yet to be confirmed.

“I will be able to give a firm answer in tomorrow’s press conference (today),” he said.

The press conference is at the Ministry of Youth and Sports Nadi office at 10am.

Haider collapsed after his ninth round TKO (technical knockout) loss to Sydney-based boxer Runqi Zhou for the IBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title fight at Nadi’s Prince Charles Park on Saturday, October 26.

He was taken to Zen’s Medical and transferred to Lautoka’s Aspen Medical Fiji where he underwent head surgery as he was in a coma.

He failed to recover and died on November 10.

Haider was buried at the Raralevu Cemetery in Tailevu on November 12.

He is the fourth Fiji boxer to have died from head injuries sustained in the fight.
