MANY in Gizo, Western Province, have fallen ill with influenza, according to health officials.
A nurse at the Gizo Hospital Outpatient Department confirmed to Solomon Star that a flu outbreak is currently affecting the community.
“We have seen a significant number of patients coming in with flu-like symptoms, including fever, cough, body aches, and breathing difficulties since early this month,” the nurse said.
Health workers believe the bad weather situation affecting the country contributes to the influenza outbreak as weather pattern changes often weaken the immune system and create favorable conditions for viral infections.
Doctors and nurses are particularly concerned about individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma.
“Anyone with asthma is at a higher risk of severe complications if they catch this viral flu. If symptoms worsen, it can be life-threatening,” the nurse warned.
Gizo residents are advised to take precautionary measures, including the practice of good hygiene, wearing masks in crowded areas, and seeking medical assistance if symptoms become severe.
Health authorities continue to monitor the situation and urge the public to remain vigilant in preventing further spread of the illness.
